Missed my dA b-day again. I have officially been here for six years now as of February 4th! So, to celebrate I'm running a stupidly silly little contest involving telling funny stories based on stock photos. Come check out all the details here: http://katara-alchemist.deviantart.com/journal/forum/1835560/

The first place winner will get 200points and two runners up will get 50points each. So come join my silliness!

  • 03/05/13--11:22: Forum Updates
  • A quick breakdown of some of the forum updates that have happened over the past couple weeks. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me!

    Journal
I just wanted to throw up a quick little journal about the updates going on in the forums. I'm sure there will be something official posted soon, but I'm going to throw this up anyways.

First, the faq on the rules of the forums has been updated to reflect rules that were in place but not mentioned in the faq such as no roleplaying in the forums.
    :faq801:

The stickies in nearly every forum have been updated as well. They are now better organized, have updated information in the ones that were outdated and such. The "rules" of each forum haven't changed, they've just been better explained in the new stickies. If you have any question

A suggestion for a simple expansion to the time limit on the Sitback Slideshow function that would allow it to be used as a learning tool for artists interested in gesture drawing.

As many people will tell you, one of the best ways to improve in anatomy and the drawing of human figures in general is to take a life drawing class and/or draw from real models. And one of the things you will find in every life drawing class is gesture sketching. Gestures are loose, quick sketches done in short increments of time from thirty seconds on up. The more time you have the more detailed the sketch, but things still say pretty loose and simple when you gesture.

Now, there's countless tools on the internet to do gestures with. Posemaniacs has a thirty second drawing function (though I'm not fond of it, since they aren't real models.

  • Cintqs, man. Cintiqs...

    Journal
Never play with a cintq unless it is your own. Never. It will ruin you for any other tablet, no matter what. You will be ruined.

Now please excuse me while I figure out a way to hide in my school so that I can live there after hours and thus will never have to leave that beautiful machine.

  • 03/29/13--17:05: Still alive!
  • Life is trying to eat me. Again.

    Journal
Sorry I haven't been very active the past couple weeks! I was doing an group project in one of my online classes and my partner got in a car accident. She was fine, but it still stuck a wrench in everything and our due dates ended up all over the place and it was just crazy.

It's probably going to stay a bit crazy as well, since (I think) the group project goes to the end of the semester and we're already so off in everything it's going to be a bit hard to get back on track. Only three weeks left though, and then I'm off until late August!

I will be around though, just not doing much since life is trying very hard to eat me. I've go

    Journal
It is a go! The Meet will happen Saturday, June 1st, though a specific time won't be announced until we get a tad closer (that way I can try and schedule around big panels and such). All information on the con can be found on the con's  website, so come take a look for specifics.

Also, as for specific place, that will be decided Friday May 31st as I need to go scope the place out on the first day of the con since I have no idea how they'll be using the convention center. I'll send out an announcement with all final details that Friday afternoon, and you guys can always reach me through note or twitter (@KataraAlchemist) if you need a

  • 04/12/13--21:51: Wild Child
  • Finally sat down and did a painting of the lovely Juliet Simms! Such a beautiful woman and I adore her voice and music.
Check out her recent single, which inspired this painting, Wild Child: [link]

I spent a lot of time at the zoo for this one. It was a great day because it was cool outside, so the three tigers were very active. It was a great day.

Also, I THINK I got all of Juliet's visible tattoos. Hopefully. XD

Please tell me what you think! I'm pretty proud of this one, but I know there's still things I could've improved on so I'll take any feedback you've got for me. :)

I've been working on this off and on for awhile now. It is the crest of the Lyburn family from The Lyburn Legacy series by Sarah Rees Brennan. The crest is very well described in the first book of the series, so I really wanted to do something with it.

This also isn't the final version. I was talking to Sarah about the crest and she said there is a riddle involved with it that will come in with the second book, so when that comes out I'll be making some adjustments to show that riddle.

Any and all feedback is more than welcome! And please go check out Sarah's books.

Now excuse me while I go drool over the ARC's of the next book in the series that Sarah keeps taunting us with.

Top left: The actual crest. I wanted to keep the very simple, flat feel of most family crests but I also had to balance that out with the level of detail in the Lyburn crest. I had about three versions of this before I settled on one I liked.

Top Right: The Lyburns have a habit of killing people over giant versions of their crest. They're like that...

Bottom Left: A black and white version.

Bottom Right: A slightly aged version.

  • 04/25/13--14:26: Commissions Open
  • I'm currently unempolyed and cash is running VERY short, so every commission helps. All info inside and if you want to know more just leave a comment or shoot me a note. :)

Ah, rent. Thou are a heartless, expensive, bitch. So! Commissions are open. Prices start at $20 for a sketch and go up from there. Prices vary based on the style you want (realism will be more expensive then a simpler style), the number of characters you want, if you want a background, if it's for commercial or personal use, etc.

Note me with the form from below filled out and I'll give you a price estimation. :)

Also, there is no limit to the amount of commissions I will take right now since I need to pay rent and don't currently have a job! If you want more than one though, please send each request in a separate note so I can keep things

  • 04/28/13--20:27: Lost it All
  • It's done, it's done, it's done! I've been working on this one for over a month. A freaking month. So glad to have it finished though.

This piece is based on the Black Veil Brides song "Lost it All" featuring Juliet Simms from their newest album "Wretched and Divine". The song is amazing and I highly recommend you check it out: [link]

As soon as I heard the song I had a really strong image come to mind, the whole album created some really good visuals honestly, but Lost it All was the strongest one in my mind.

There's a few things I may change about this, but overall I'm happy with it.

Also, thank you ^Elandria for the great stock I used as a reference in this! There's no way I could've drawn a room like this without a reference. It wouldn't have been good. At all. :XD:

Edit: Smoothed the animation a bit.

Okay, I wasn't originally going to upload this here but I needed it to test a little something. ;)

So here's a quick doodle I did of my Supernatural OC, Alice, who plays a significant roll in a fanfiction I'm writing.

  • 05/14/13--11:18: A Secret No One Tells
  • My entry for the Untold ARC contest. Kami Glass being all detectivey and trying to solve the secret of the Lyburns. I used my version of the Lyburn crest down in the corner since the crest is involved in the secret somehow.

I'm semi-happy with this, but I may adjust it a bit before the final deadline of the contest.
