  • 01/18/14--12:07: How did that even happen?

  • I decided to do a little cleaning out of various bits of deviantART today and I started off with my groups list. I went through it and left a lot of groups that are dead or that I just don't care about anymore. Then I discovered something. I am apparently the founder of :devFCDB:. Now, this was a group I was asked to be a contributor in several months ago, but I have no freaking clue how I ended up the founder of the thing. There's no correspondence messages in my inbox asking to approve the change or anything, I checked. I would think that, even if you didn't have to approve being made the founder of a group, you would at least be notified.

  • 01/19/14--18:05: Ronan Watercolor
  • Two pieces of art in as many days? What is this strange madness?!

Any-who. Here's Ronan from The Raven Boys. I think I did about ten different versions of his back tattoo and I'm still not totally happy with the one I came up with. I mean, I love how it looks, but it isn't quite what I pictured when I was reading.

Aside from his tattoo, his design was heavily based on CassandraJean's interpretation of the character because it's just perfect.

And yes, his ass his hanging out. No, there's really no reason for that aside from me wanting to draw a bit of his ass. Don't judge.

NO SPOILERS FOR DREAM THIEVES PLEASE! I HAVEN'T STARTED IT YET.

  • 01/29/14--10:19: Helen and Shae
  • This features my characters Helen (on the left) and Shae. Both are characters in my new novel concept that I'm working on.

I hate pencil. So damn much. I have yet to discover a medium I hate more. But we had to use pencil for this project (since this was done for one of my college classes). Colored pencils are a little better, but I still don't like them much either.

Also, the scanner BUTCHERED this. But I don't particularly care since I'm going to turn this into a painting as well when I get the chance.

Yes, I am well aware that the perspective on the makeup table is way off. Shhh....I'll fix it later.

  • Because sometimes you need someone to hold down, and sometimes I need someone to hold me down.

Have some Adam and Ronan from "The Raven Cycle" by Maggie Stiefvater! I’ve been led to believe that their ship name is Rodam? IDK. But I like them. A lot.

I drew this listening to “Youth and Whiskey” by Black Veil Brides.

  • 02/09/14--20:10: Denver Comic-Con 2014

  • Who else is going? I just got my tickets. I wasn't sure if I was going to go this year since I was possibly going to move out of Denver just before the Con, but plans have shifted a bit so I caved and got tickets. Three day passes are $50 and one day passes haven't gone on sale just yet.

I don't think I'm going to host an actual dev-meet this year since I don't have the time to plan it, and I may have to do some stuff with my college since they always have a booth and I've gotten to be friends with the lady who runs such things, but if anyone wants to meet up I'd love to meet you guys! Just shoot me a note and we'll work something out.

Hey darlings, I've got some questions for you. I'm looking into doing a semester abroad this fall, but my school doesn't have an official program which really just means I have to do most of the legwork on my own.

So that's where you guys come in! After doing a little research on my own and being thoroughly confused by the way your college/university system is set up as compared the US one, I was hoping you guys could help me out and possibly recommend some places based on your own experiences so I'll have a better starting point for what to look at. I'm not picky about where in the UK, so that's nothing to worry about. I would love for it t

I have access! It's a super interesting program and I'm really happy that I've finally got a chance to play with it. I'm going to use this journal to post my thoughts on the program as I learn it. It will be updated every time I have something new to say about the program.

Please note, I am still learning this program and there is almost no direction on how to do so, thus I'm flying blind. Because of this I may miss things such as features I complain of the program not having. Feel free to correct me if that is the case!

  • 03/02/14--15:33: Anyone know Latin?

  • Because I need a little help with the title for a comic I'm working on. I already know, basically, what I want the title to be, I just need to have someone let me know if the Latin I'm using means what I want it to. So if any of you know Latin or know someone who does and could send them my way I would be much obliged!

Alrighty, the title needs to mean "Abandoned Power" or something very close to that, which I think is "Relictus Potentia" in Latin. Operative word there being think. My knowledge of Latin is incredibly limited. Also, the main characters of the comic are all female, so I would like the title to be the feminine forms of the word

Sorry for the double upload! Something got screwed up with the last one.

Anyways, this is a lineart I did for the Dean/Cas Color Exchange over on tumblr. It was super fun and I can't wait until they do another exchange.

You are more than welcome to color this, however there's a few rules:
    1) Please leave my watermark on the picture.
    2) You may post your colored version anywhere you like, but you MUST link back to the original lineart so that other people can find it and color it if they want to.
    3) You must send me a link to where you posted the work if you do color it so I can see your beautiful art!

Press download for the full-sized lineart and have fun! :)

Still alive, even if I haven't be around much. I'm working on lots of stuff though!

I've got a good job at my college right now, though the pay is pretty horrid so I'll probably be pushing my commissions a bit more over the summer. I'm always open if anyone is interested! I'll have a journal up with more specific info sometime in the next couple weeks, but if you're interested now please feel free to note me. The nice thing about the job though is that I'm working the front desk which means I've got lots of time to draw and work on my own stuff while at work which is great because I've got a lot of projects going right now including querying

  • 04/25/14--18:47: Vivian's House
  • The home of one of the characters in my new writing project "Masqued." There will probably be a lot more concepts of this place as a good chunk of one of the novels happens here. And because I'm in love with the place. That to. It is in the Colorado Rockies in roughly the same area as my family cabin and is in a state of sort of...intentional shambles.

This was my first serious attempt with prisma markers and while it isn't perfect I'm still pretty happy with it. There's a few bits of prisma colored pencils in there as well, but it's 98% marker. Recently my college store had a sale on Prisma Markers for $0.80 each and these things are normally $3.50 at my school store and up to $6.50 each at local craft stores so, needless to say, I bought a fucking crap ton of them (seriously, I carry them around in a suitcase because it's the only thing big enough) even though I'd never used markers before. So now I figure I probably SHOULD use them and thus I'll be using them a lot. If anyone has tips they'd like to share I'd love to hear them!

Also...trees. Specifically the leafy/needley parts of trees. ...I tried. I really did. I'm super happy with the trunks of the trees, but the leafy/needley parts? Not so much... I know the perspective is off a bit as well in a few areas, but I realized to late to really do anything about it. Next time!

  • 04/26/14--19:52: Shae's outfits 1-9
  • More stuff for my new novel project "The Violet Veil" which is a part of my bigger project "Masqued." This time it is the first nine outfits worn by one of the main characters; Shae. I promise there is logic to the weird variety of styles and time periods she wears. And to the fact her hair is black in one drawing... Fashion is an important part of the world of the book, especially to Shae, so I'm going to be drawing every main outfit that she wears in the books. These nine encompass around the first 1/3 to maybe the first 1/2 of the first book depending how things work out. More will come later once I better plot out the rest of the first book and eventually the later books.

Also, sorry for the horrid anatomy. I'm still trying to get the hang of legs... and you know, a lot of other things. >.> I was more focused on the fashions themselves for this project though, so I'm not to bothered by it.

  • 04/29/14--08:19: King of Thieves Illustration
  • An illustration for my review of "King of Thieves" by Jane Kindred. Holy hell is it a good book (and series for that matter). Fair warning before you go looking though, it does feature a gay BDSM relationship and quite often more than two people being...involved. ;) You can read the review here: katy-l-wood.tumblr.com/post/84…

Sadly this is not a scene from the book, as much as I might want it to be because...you know, uniforms and wings and shibari...all great things. It's still the main characters though, Belphagor (in the uniform) and Vasily (in the rope), so I figure it counts. Enough. Shh. >.>

Anywho, the uniform is based off of Russian military uniforms as the book is heavily Russian based and some parts take place in Russia. I didn't do a straight copy of the Russian uniforms though, for various reasons. I liked this cut of the uniform better but the colors of the uniforms with this cut didn't fit what I was going for. That and I'm pretty sure this ISN'T an airforce uniform despite the fact that he is wearing an airforce hat (which is a not so subtle call to the fact that he's an airspirit). The only good reference I could find for multiple types of uniforms was all in Russian, alright? And not only was it in Russian, it wasn't even Russian text, it was a picture of Russian text so I couldn't just have Chrome translate the page for me. I tried.

However, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out overall because it looks pretty much EXACTLY like I pictured it looking when I started, which as any artist will tell you is a fucking raritey. That shit doesn't happen. But it did and I'm very pleased about it. I think Bel's wings turned out really well to. I wasn't sure how to convey wings made of air, so I went through a few different ideas. I really like this one even if it doesn't quite convey "air" because, for some reason, if I always pictured the elemental wings in the book to look sort of like glass filled with the element of that spirit.

Also, do you know how much of a pain it is to DRAW shibari setups? Trying to make sure you have the same amount of rope going into the knot as you do coming out of the knot, making sure ropes doen't vanish when they go between different parts of the body or around them. It made my brain hurt.

This is the smuttiest thing I've ever posted here so...sorry if this shocks any of you. I do a lot of smut related stuff, actually, it's just that 90% of it can't end up here. But I'm so damn proud of this one I'm gonna toe the line a little. hehe.

  • Needed something mind-numbingly distracting after my shitty week, so I decided to re-do my page a bit! I'm still working on it, but I'd love to know what you guys think so far.

I re-did that newest box so many times.  I completely broke my entire page once while working on it. Like, all image links broke, images glitched the fuck out, nothing would load. Had to pretty much reset firefox to fix it. Not entirely sure what exactly went wrong however...

A lot of you guys have really liked this piece, which makes me very happy because I'm pretty happy with it myself. Not entirely, mind you, but still relatively happy. Any-who. The reason I'm writing this is because Vivian's House, more specifically it's location, is actually based the area where my family cabin is. This was done because, for one, it is a beautiful area in the Colorado Rockies, and also because I am really familiar with the area which makes it easy for me to write about it since her house, and the area around it, is an important setting in my new novel project.

Anyways, the reason I'm rambling about all this is because I'm go

It's done! Been working on this for over two weeks now, off and on. These are the six main characters of my new novel project "The Violet Veil" the first novel of which is currently titled "Kith and Kin." In order we've got the actress, the mountain woman, the first grade teacher, the mountain man, the soldier, and the actor.

Fashion is a very important part of the world these characters live in, so what they're wearing really reflects who they are and I spent a lot of time on their outfits and each outfit went through a lot of revisions.

Also, I noticed something while researching clothing for Dustin. Trying to find good pictures of mountain men is like trying to find pictures of Bigfoot. I eventually gave up and pulled out some old westerns to watch for reference material. My dad would be so proud.

You'll be seeing a lot more of these six in the coming months! If you want to know more about the story, you can read about it here.

Time to complete: 4-5 hours each. Lots of revisions since this is my first time drawing any of these guys.

Sorry I couldn't get these up on Instagram like I promised, guys! My phone decided it no longer wants to function up there.

But anyways, here's some pictures of the area around where my character Vivian's house is. The location is the setting for around half of at least one book in the series that I have created Vivian for. It is the Williams Fork Valley area of Colorado which played host to Ute Indians along with a few other tribes and there was at least one large battle there. The battle ground is now under the Williams Fork Reservoir though. There were also frequent Ute horse races in the area, though the track can no longer be seen.

  • 06/12/14--10:05: Denver Comic-Con tomorrow!

  • Who's going to be there? I will be there all three days with a couple friends. If you see me please don't hesitate to come up and say hello. I'll be in my standard con outfit (with some new upgrades for this year!).

I'm super excited for this year's con because there's a ton of good panels  that I'm looking forward to going to, and a few artists I'm looking forward to seeing in Artist Valley. Should be super fun.

Also, standard con-outfit is this thing, my hair is just a bit shorter now:

  • 07/21/14--18:47: Kala
  • Kala and his albino parrot Ghost. Haven’t drawn this idiot in way to long so I decided to draw him as a quick break from comic pages and homework.

Kala is a ghost hunter and runs a paranormal talk show (Named “Searching For Strange”) out of Glenwood Springs Colorado. Half Russian, half Italian, and Asexual for all intents and purposes. His full name is Daren Michael Cook but he always goes by Kala, Kalaghata, or Mike. He’s got four other pets (not counting fish): a deaf black cat named Jack-O-Lantern (Jack for short), and three huskies two of which are each missing a leg and one who is blind. He’s trained the parrot to hand out candy on Halloween and talk on the radio show, and he’s got the huskies trained to pull his nieces and nephews in their sleds. Jack’s just an untrained idiot who may have a bit of brain damage as well, but Kala loves him.

Kala actually doesn’t go with any story in particular. He’s like my signature in my big projects. He shows up everywhere. If he’s in a story you know it’s mine.

  • I could've sworn I uploaded this here...apparently not.

I suppose this at is a tiny bit spoilery, but no more than anything Cassandra Jean drew before the book even came out so I figure it’s okay. I never want to draw a character surrounded by fire again. Never. It made me want to chuck my tablet out the window. -dead- I mean, I discovered an awesome new method of painting fire which saved me a hell of a lot of time. But still. The lighting. THE LIGHTING. Crazy little druggie actor who has a lot of unknown motives (unknown to the other characters) and spends 99% of his time tripping on something. • Next up in the Kith and Kin characters in chairs series we've got Dustin! Dustin is one of Shae's older brothers and spends a lot of his time living rough in the Canadian wilderness. When he's not living rough he's at home with his extensive family helping out on the family farm and playing with his younger siblings and young nieces. The notches on his walking stick count the number of times he's left home and lived rough, and beneath the grip he's carved the names of his family (which continue under his hand). The names remind him that he needs to come home, no matter how long he's been gone.

  • Lookie who I decided to draw again! It has been far to long. I've missed these boys. Please enjoy post-hunt-hyped Alec ravishing Magnus before even managing to get all of his gear off. He totally walked in to find Magnus already naked and tied up on the bed. Because Magnus is like that.

If you're curious about the tattoos, Magnus was--way back when in the very beginning--imagined as having tattoos: far-eviler.deviantart.com/art/… and I've always pictured him as having them, so wala! Tattoos.

Wanted to do something a little more painterly since I've been working in mostly cell-shading type stuff lately. Found a delightful little brush that I'm totally in love with now.

Figured I'd provide an explanation for the series now that it's done! The characters in this painting series are the six major characters from the main series of my new novel project. The project is currently titled Masqued, though that's a working title. The series is titled "Kith and Kin." Originally that was the title of the first novel of the series and the series was originally called "The Violet Veil" but I've decided "Kith and Kin" makes a better series title now that I'm about 1/2 way through writing the first book. Things may still change though. We'll see! The entire project, as it's currently mapped out, will contain the "Kith and

  • 08/26/14--19:38: Oh god, my keywords!

  • Okay, I really don't mind the idea of moving to tags. I think it could be really useful. I've got some issues with how they're going about it, but overall I think this could be a really good idea. But why in the world did they have to transfer things over the way they did?! My key-wording is destroyed! Things were combined in the most random manner, things added that weren't there before. This is going to take ages to fix. Blerg.

Also, it's going to take me ages to break the habit of not using spaces until I want to start a new tag and not using commas after every tag. Guh. Going to have to totally re-train myself now.

    0 0

A quick and dirty mock up of some updates I would love to see made to the Manage Deviations page in general, but ESPECIALLY in light of the new tagging system and how much of a pain it is going to be to go fix the tags on every single one of my deviations since it'll be a ton of back and forth opening and closing of pages.

Essentially, I'd like to see a system where everything happens on one page. We go to "Manage Deviations" and all our deviations are listed looking like the last three on this suggestion--we'll say 8-10 deviations per page--and then when you edit the deviation from there it will open up IN THE SAME PAGE to show you all the options related to submitting a deviation. This will make it much quicker, easier, and smoother to manage our galleries in general but especially when major changes like the new tagging system come up. You would be able to do every single thing you could do on a standard deviation edit, except you can do it to all of your deviations in one place.

It would also be cool (for stock providers especially) to be able to select multiple deviations and apply the same changes to every deviation at once. Maybe I'll mock that up later, after the holiday weekend which I'm supposed to be packing for but am not backing for because I decided to do this instead...

Anyways! Tell me what you think.

Here's the deviations I used in the mock up:

Come hang out! Some of my classmates from one of my classes may be joining us as well, since a few wanted a breakdown of how to get started in digital art. Please feel free to ask any questions you have as well!

Working on some character designs, maybe some material studies, and we'll see what else!

Because I clearly don't have enough huge projects going on, I may as well add another one, right? I've gotten it in my head to do a Peter Pan retelling. I have a lot of the back story fleshed out, and a very loose skeleton of the plot, but I'm still undecided if I want to do it as a novel or a comic. Either way, have some character designs for Hook and Wendy! There's a very specific reason I gave Hook Vitiligo, but I'm going to keep it to myself for now as it's spoilery. You MIGHT be able to guess it if you've read the original Pan stories though. MIGHT.

  • 11/02/14--13:07: Vivian's Kitchen
  • I actually finished this ages ago but never uploaded it for some reason. I'm moderately happy with it. It was only my second large (11x17inches) piece with prisma color markers, so in that account it's pretty good. Still working on not getting streaks and learning how to blend the markers. Getting there little by little.

This is the kitchen of my character Vivian. Just felt the need to draw it.

If you want to know more about the story Vivian is in you can read about it here.

  • 11/02/14--13:12: Nightlights
  • This was the final project for my Figure Drawing III course last term. My third attempt at a larger prismacolor marker piece. Got a little better about the streaking this time, but slipped up in a few other areas. Still relatively happy with it, however.

The characters come from my new Peter Pan retelling that I've started working on recently. It's still pretty loosely formed, but it has been a fun idea to play with. The illustration features my interpretations of the characters of Captain Hook and Wendy Darling.

  • 12/29/14--22:06: Malec Christmas
  • Yes, yes, Christmas is over and Malec day has long passed. Shhhhhhhhh…. >.> Just enjoy cuddly Malec with a large pile of glittery presents and one little, already opened, one that was wrapped in newspaper and may or may not have been an engagement ring. ;)

I had a lot of fun with this piece. It’s been far to long since I’ve done one like this which totally shows, I know because of college eating up all my time. I’ve missed nitty gritty detailed stuff like this.

  • 01/17/15--15:43: My Projects
  • Just a journal to keep my watchers up to date on my big projects I'm currently working on. It will be updated whenever there is new information on any of the projects, or if a new project is added to it. If you have any questions about any of the projects please don't hesitate to ask!

Kith and Kin is a multi-novel project with one planned series of 4-5 books and at least three planned stand-alone novels. Right now my focus is on the series the first book of which is currently untitled.

The first book follows 22 year old Shae Lockwood who ran away from her fugitive family when she was 12 years old. She wanted to live the life she grew up hearing her parents talk about, a life of all the glitz and glamour of being an actor in a world where actors were practically royalty. Shae finally gets her break as an actress shortly before the start of the book only to be kidnapped by two of her brothers who, like the rest of her famil

  • 01/24/15--22:59: Ronan Lynch
  • It. Is. DONE.

One of my resolutions this year was to do at least one big, finished illustration per month. I figure it is much more reasonable than than doing a daily or even weekly challenge for me since its a lot easier to fit it into my schedule this way.

So! For January we’ve got Ronan Lynch dreaming in Cabeswater. I really wanted to encapsulate this idea of him being sort of entangled in the forest and bringing things to life from it as he dreams. I tried to include a lot of the different things he’s dreamed and I tossed in maggie-stiefvater's license plate as well just for fun because Ronan never dreamed up Kavinsky's plate (well, not that we know of. Who knows what all got dreamed up in that lot full of cars).

Let me tell you it was an incredible struggle not to make this thing stupidly long and have Blue, Adam, and Gansey placed around it each in their own little “level” as well. But, for one thing, a piece that stupidly long would’ve been annoying. For another I never would’ve finished by the end of January. So! I might just do a series of paintings like this with one for each of them. We’ll see how time constraints and inspiration feel about that plan though.

I listened to “Devil’s Backbone” by The Civil Wars on a loop while drawing this. It is my perfect Gansey/Ronan bromance song. Seriously. Go listen to it and tell me it doesn’t make you think of those two.

I've been on this website for 8 years, and it has been a great 8 years. I've met a lot of great people, learned a ton, and had a great time here. I've been a regular member, a subscribed member, a volunteer, and now a senior member. But, with all of that said, I'm just not enjoying the site as much as I used to. I have been putting more and more effort in over time, but getting less and less in return. That's not an equation I'm particularly fond of. Honestly, I think most of the problem is how BIG this site has gotten. I can't think of another social media website I'm on that has so many features. There's so much going on at any given time t

It was a couple years ago (according to the date of the deviation anyways. It doesn't feel that long ago. O.o). I've decided to go back and polish it up and make a fully-designed one with all fasteners and hardware included, more pieces, etc. So that's where you guys come in! I'd love to hear your ideas about what else could be included, anything that could be improved, etc. Basically, tell me what your dream workspace would be and what it would need!

  • 04/06/15--10:18: The newish tag system

  • Yes, yes, I'm talking about this again. It has come up again a couple times recently when I was talking to various staff members on their journals or mine, so I figured I'd put together a better breakdown of why exactly I don't like this new system, because it's a bit much for a single comment.

Alright, so, in this new system the tags don't use spaces. I've yet to hear a decent reason for this, and that bugs me, because the lack of spaces just doesn't work. Plenty of sites do have tags with spaces (tumblr and youtube, to name just a couple) so it is totally possible, however I do understand that the framework of some sites can make it incred

  • 11/02/13--20:52: Motivation tricks?

  • Okay, I cave. Anyone got any tricks for motivation? Because I can't motivate myself for my Art History Class for shit. It's mostly because the entire first half of the semester was royally screwed up and thus I lost total faith in the class and the teacher. (There's a really long, rambling story to go with this, but essentially the teacher wasn't teaching at all. No feedback was given, no interaction, nothing. This has been fixed by administration now, but it's to little to late for various reasons.)

The class is online and entirely essay based with a huge amount of reading every week. I've tried every motivational trick I know of. Candy, mu

Hey guys, just wanted to stop in and give some updates.

First off, thanks for all the well wishes now that my term as a volunteer is up. It was a great year, I just wish I could've done more! (Join the volunteer team during your first year of college, Katara. There's no chances of that crashing and burning, Katara. Ha.)

I have had a REALLY long year, and not in a good way. I've had a falling out with my mother to the point we barely speak, my grandfather is dying, the other has already passed away, and my college has screwed me ten ways to Sunday. You know, the usual stuff.

All of this has had me really antsy. "Get on a flight to Paris at
