An illustration for my review of "King of Thieves" by Jane Kindred. Holy hell is it a good book (and series for that matter). Fair warning before you go looking though, it does feature a gay BDSM relationship and quite often more than two people being...involved. You can read the review here: katy-l-wood.tumblr.com/post/84…
Sadly this is not a scene from the book, as much as I might want it to be because...you know, uniforms and wings and shibari...all great things. It's still the main characters though, Belphagor (in the uniform) and Vasily (in the rope), so I figure it counts. Enough. Shh. >.>
Anywho, the uniform is based off of Russian military uniforms as the book is heavily Russian based and some parts take place in Russia. I didn't do a straight copy of the Russian uniforms though, for various reasons. I liked this cut of the uniform better but the colors of the uniforms with this cut didn't fit what I was going for. That and I'm pretty sure this ISN'T an airforce uniform despite the fact that he is wearing an airforce hat (which is a not so subtle call to the fact that he's an airspirit). The only good reference I could find for multiple types of uniforms was all in Russian, alright? And not only was it in Russian, it wasn't even Russian text, it was a picture of Russian text so I couldn't just have Chrome translate the page for me. I tried.
However, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out overall because it looks pretty much EXACTLY like I pictured it looking when I started, which as any artist will tell you is a fucking raritey. That shit doesn't happen. But it did and I'm very pleased about it. I think Bel's wings turned out really well to. I wasn't sure how to convey wings made of air, so I went through a few different ideas. I really like this one even if it doesn't quite convey "air" because, for some reason, if I always pictured the elemental wings in the book to look sort of like glass filled with the element of that spirit.
Also, do you know how much of a pain it is to DRAW shibari setups? Trying to make sure you have the same amount of rope going into the knot as you do coming out of the knot, making sure ropes doen't vanish when they go between different parts of the body or around them. It made my brain hurt.
This is the smuttiest thing I've ever posted here so...sorry if this shocks any of you. I do a lot of smut related stuff, actually, it's just that 90% of it can't end up here. But I'm so damn proud of this one I'm gonna toe the line a little. hehe.
